"Cleaning up in clean-tech industries"

"The federal stimulus package, with its emphasis on green jobs, is helping to infuse funds and support for the growth. But according to the Colorado Cleantech Industry Association, an industry support group, the clean-tech boom is being powered by the state's mix of innovators, research and entrepreneurs.

The CCIA released a state cleantech action plan in mid-October to provide an industry overview and to identify areas for development and growth. The organization ratcheted up the fanfare by holding the first-ever Cleantech Awards ceremony, where Northern Colorado businesses, um, cleaned up."

"Colorado is poised to become a world leader in the cleantech industry" - By CCIA Founding Executive Director Christine Shapard

From the ColoradoBiz Planet-Profit Report Guest Voice Column - now online and in the September ColoradoBiz magazine:

"Consider these impressive stats – Colorado is No. 3 in the U.S. for cleantech venture capital financing; we’re No. 4 in the country for percentage of jobs in the cleantech sector, and the state is home to more than 300 companies producing cleantech products. According to Pew Charitable Trusts, Colorado’s cleantech industry is growing faster than the state’s other industry sectors.

Pretty impressive stats for a less-populated state like Colorado, aren’t they? We think so, and that’s why we started the Colorado Cleantech Industry Association (CCIA). We aim to create a business climate that not only helps the state maintain its globally recognized clean technology leadership position, but also enables us to jump ahead and lead the world."

New Study: The Mountain West Can Lead the Way on Energy Innovation

We want to call your attention to a report released yesterday by Brookings Mountain West.

Quoting from the report's conclusion: "The Intermountain West region is poised to help reinvent America’s fossil-fuel dependent energy system and so construct the “next economy” in the Mountain region and nationally.

The nation should move proactively and aggressively to build the proposed Intermountain West network of high-powered energy innovation commercialization centers.

Through such an intervention, the federal government could catalyze a dynamic new partnership of Mountain West businesses, research universities, federal laboratories, entrepreneurs, and state and local government to transform the nation’s carbon-dependent economy. Along the way, the nation could experiment with a dynamic new approach to leveraging for the nation’s benefit a powerful regional innovation complex while helping to empower the Intermountain West to reach its potential for prominence in a 'next economy' that will be opportunity-rich as well as export-oriented, lower-carbon, and innovation fueled."

New Ernst & Young Data - Cleantech Matters: The Rising Influence of Corporations on Cleantech Growth

SPEAKERS at July 8 CCIA member education event: Leaders from Ernst & Young’s Assurance Services groups in Denver and Houston led the discussion.

Lisa Shepard – Partner, Assurance Services

Milan Hall – Senior Manager, Assurance Services

BACKGROUND: Will corporations lead cleantech out of the "valley of death?" - Despite the enthusiastic support for cleantech from governments and large companies all over the world, the journey for a cleantech product from prototype to commercial scale remains so difficult that many in the industry have taken to calling it "the valley of death."

How will the industry escape this predicament? Part of the answer may be new financing and corporate partnership models that satisfy the funding requirements of a capital intensive industry as an acceptable level of risk for investors.

Corporations are being driven to implement a resource-efficiency agenda based on cleantech to improve operations and reduce costs, respond to climate change, achieve sustainability goals, generate revenue, decrease dependency on fossil fuels and comply with current and anticipated regulations. With such compelling motivation, will corporations lead the way in providing financing to bring clean technologies to commercial deployment?

"Colorado harvests a green economy: About $1.1 billion in federal and venture-capital funds help boost eco-jobs from 1995 to 2007, a study says."

The Colorado Cleantech Industry Association's Executive Director Chris Shapard was quoted in this morning's feature in the Denver Post on "Colorado harvests a green economy."

"Colorado ranked 15th among states in capturing the energy-related federal stimulus funds in the past 18 months, the report said.

'Fifteenth, we ought to be able to do better than that,' said Christine Shapard, executive director of the Colorado Cleantech Industry Association...

Shapard said the report points out that 'we've had great leadership on these issues for the last four years. We have to pray that continues.'

Gov. Bill Ritter, who made promoting a 'New Energy Economy' a hallmark of his administration, is not running for re-election.

'This report very clearly and accurately documents the successes of Colorado's New Energy Economy,' Ritter said in a statement. 'Colorado is now a national leader for clean-energy policies, jobs and innovation.'"

Business For Breakfast: Interview with Christine Shapard

CCIA Executive Director Christine Shapard was interviewed on the Colorado Radio Network's Business For Breakfast show this morning. She was interviewed by Woody Vincent about the Association's recent $80,000 grant from the US EDA for Colorado's Cleantech Roadmap.

CCIA Partners with the ColoradoBiz Magazine Planet-Profit Report as it Expands to Western U.S.

The Colorado Cleantech Industry Association is now a sponsor of the ColoradoBiz Planet-Profit Report (PPR), which is expanding into the Western U.S.

Energy and economic sustainability will be the focus of the new regional PPR media platform from the publishers of ColoradoBiz magazine. Published as a quarterly section in the magazine since early 2007, PPR will now be circulated weekly to stakeholders in the discussion about energy and economic sustainability from Texas north to the Dakotas and all points west.

Bart Taylor, publisher of ColoradoBiz and Planet-Profit Report, says, “We think PPR is unique in two important ways: Economic development is the lens through which we’ll report on sustainability. And second, while coverage of ‘green’ business and sustainability is most often national in scope, or hyper-local, we think a regional discussion is needed to frame the competition for money, resources and talent in renewables and clean-tech, as well as the dialogue about sustainable growth – water being a great example. It’s also in California, Arizona and Colorado’s interest for the West to build a brand as a global center for sustainable energy development."

The CCIA is excited to now be part of the PPR partnership team.

WASHINGTON - The U.S. Commerce Department’s Economic Development Administration (EDA) today announced an $80,000 grant to the Colorado Cleantech Industry Association of Denver, Colo., to create an action plan to guide the development and growth of the cleantech industry in Colorado.

“Expanding the clean technology sector enhances our nation’s economic competiveness in the global economy, creates higher-skill, living-wage jobs and lessens our dependence on foreign oil,” said U.S. Assistant Secretary of Commerce for Economic Development John R. Fernandez. “This EDA grant will develop an action plan that will accelerate and drive the development of Colorado’s cleantech industry.”

“The Colorado Cleantech Industry Association was founded on the premise that clean technologies that enable the use of renewable resources and that allow traditional energy sources be used more efficiently can be an important driver of Colorado’s future economy. Funding of the Colorado Cleantech Action Plan will give Colorado and Colorado’s cleantech companies the data, analysis and action steps necessary to compete in the large and growing international clean technology marketplace,” said Christine Shapard, Executive Director of the Colorado Cleantech Industry Association.
